At the beginning of a new league season, you may not want to use a player's new average right away because they have not played enough matches yet.

CompuSport allows you to use a temporary average, such as the player's average from the previous season, for a set number of nights. Once the player has played enough nights, the system will automatically switch to their current calculated average.

Example

You want to:

  • Use each player's previous season average for their first 3 nights.
  • Starting with their 4th night, use the average they have earned during the current season.

There is no need to manually change the player's average after the first 3 nights. CompuSport will switch automatically.

Step 1 — Enter the temporary average for each player

Go to:

Menu > Manage > Players/Teams > Players

Select the appropriate division.

Use one of the available Custom Value columns to enter the temporary average for each player.

For example:

Custom Value 1 = Previous Season Average

PlayerCustom Value 1
John Smith8.25
Jane Doe7.60
Robert Jones9.10

You can enter the values directly in the player grid.

Tip: If the same player may have a different temporary average depending on the division, use a Division Custom Value instead.

Step 2 — Tell CompuSport when to use the temporary average

Go to:

Menu > Manage > Brackets/Round-Robins > Round-Robins

  1. Select your Round-Robin.
  2. Click the Pencil to edit.
  3. Open the Score Input section.
  4. Find the Handicap settings.

You will use these three settings:

Field to show in handicap on score sheet

Select the stat you eventually want CompuSport to use.

For this example, select:

Average

This tells CompuSport that the player's current calculated Average is the main value you want to use once they have played enough nights.

Number of full night a player must have to use a handicap

Enter the number of completed nights required before CompuSport starts using the player's current average.

For this example, enter:

3

This means the player must have 3 completed nights before their current calculated Average is used.

Field to use for handicap on score sheet if not enough matches

Select the Custom Value where you entered the temporary averages.

For this example, select:

Custom Value 1

This tells CompuSport:

If the player has not completed 3 nights yet, use Custom Value 1 instead of their current Average.

What happens automatically?

Player's completed nightsValue used
Before Night 1Custom Value 1
After Night 1Custom Value 1
After Night 2Custom Value 1
After Night 3Current Average
All following nightsCurrent Average

In other words, Custom Value 1 is used for the player's first 3 nights, and their calculated Average is used beginning with their 4th night.

You do not need to remove the Custom Value or return to the Round-Robin settings to make the switch. CompuSport does it automatically for each player.

Important

The switch is based on each player's completed nights, not simply the league's calendar week.

For example, if the league is in Week 5 but a player has only completed 2 nights, that player can continue using the temporary Custom Value until they personally reach the required number of completed nights.

Optional — Set a default value for new players

You can also use:

Default handicap value to use for that division when not enough matches and other field (or field value) is not set

This is useful for a new player who:

  • Has not played enough nights to use their current average, and
  • Does not have a value entered in the selected Custom Value column.

For example, if your league rule states that all brand-new players start at 7.5, you can enter 7.5 as the default.

This gives you three possible levels:

Temporary Custom Value available → Use the player's Custom Value
No Custom Value available → Use the division's default value
Enough nights completed → Use the player's current calculated Average
